Tridacna derasa, known as the Derasa Clam, is a spectacular addition to any mature marine aquarium. This clam species is prized for its large, smooth mantle and vibrant colours, making it a standout invertebrate for reef enthusiasts.
Care Level: Moderate. Requires stable water parameters and moderate to high lighting.
Feeding: Primarily photosynthetic, relying on symbiotic zooxanthellae within its tissues. Supplementary feeding with phytoplankton or specialised clam foods can promote growth and health.
Compatibility: Reef safe and generally peaceful. Compatible with most reef fish and invertebrates, but avoid predatory species that may nip at the mantle.
Lighting Requirements: Moderate to high intensity lighting is essential to support the clam’s photosynthetic needs. LED or T5 lighting systems are suitable.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow is preferred to ensure nutrient exchange without causing mantle damage.
Placement: Place on a stable substrate or rockwork in a well-lit area. Avoid direct strong currents and ensure the clam is secure to prevent movement.
Tank Size: Minimum 150 litres recommended to provide stable water conditions and adequate space.
Regular water quality monitoring and maintenance are crucial for the health of Tridacna derasa. Maintain stable salinity, temperature, and calcium levels to support shell growth.
