Tridacna derasa, or the Derasa Clam, is a prized invertebrate for reef aquarium enthusiasts due to its impressive size and vibrant mantle colours. This clam species can grow significantly larger over time, making it suitable for experienced hobbyists with established tanks.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Requires stable water parameters and strong lighting.
Feeding: Primarily photosynthetic, relying on symbiotic zooxanthellae within its mantle. Supplementary feeding with phytoplankton or specialised clam foods can be beneficial, especially for smaller specimens.
Compatibility: Reef safe and generally peaceful. Avoid housing with clam-eating fish or invertebrates. Placement away from aggressive corals is recommended to prevent damage.
Lighting: High-intensity lighting is essential to support photosynthesis. Metal halide, T5, or high-output LED lighting systems are suitable.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow to ensure nutrient exchange without causing stress or mantle damage.
Placement: Securely place on a stable substrate or rockwork in a well-lit area. Avoid areas with strong direct current that may irritate the clam.
Tank Size: Minimum 150 litres recommended to accommodate growth and maintain water quality.
Regular monitoring of water parameters such as calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium is important to support shell growth and overall health.
