The Tridacna Crocea clam, often referred to as the boring clam, is a vibrant and captivating addition to mature marine reef aquariums. This Grade A specimen measures approximately 5cm and is prized for its striking mantle colours and patterns.
Care Requirements: This clam thrives under moderate to strong lighting, ideally from LED or T5 aquarium lights that support photosynthetic symbiotic algae (zooxanthellae) within its tissues. Stable water parameters with a temperature range of 24-27°C, salinity of 1.023-1.025 SG, and calcium levels around 400-450 ppm are essential for healthy growth.
Feeding: While primarily photosynthetic, Tridacna Crocea benefits from supplemental feeding of phytoplankton or specialised clam foods, especially in lower light conditions.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: This species is reef safe and compatible with most peaceful tank inhabitants. Avoid placing near aggressive corals or fish that may nip at its mantle. It requires a secure substrate or rock crevice to attach itself firmly.
Placement: Position the clam on a stable rock or sandy substrate in an area receiving moderate to strong light and gentle to moderate water flow to prevent sediment accumulation on its mantle.
Due to its moderate size and specific care needs, this clam is best suited for intermediate to advanced marine aquarists with established reef systems.
