Echinothrix calamaris, commonly known as the Calamaris Sea Urchin, is a visually captivating invertebrate prized in marine aquariums for its striking black and white banded spines. This medium-sized sea urchin is an excellent addition to reef tanks where it contributes to natural algae control.
Care Level: Moderate. Requires stable water parameters and a mature tank environment.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous, feeding on algae and detritus. Supplement with dried seaweed or specialised urchin foods if natural algae is insufficient.
Compatibility: Generally peaceful and reef safe, but may occasionally graze on soft corals or sessile invertebrates. Best kept with non-aggressive tank mates.
Tank Requirements: Minimum tank size of 75 litres recommended to provide ample space and stable conditions. Requires moderate water flow and moderate lighting.
Placement: Place on live rock or substrate where it can graze freely. Avoid areas with strong currents that may dislodge it.
Additional Notes: Handle with care due to sharp spines. Ensure tank is mature and stable before introduction to prevent stress and mortality.
