Diadema antillarum is a large, long-spined sea urchin native to the Caribbean and western Atlantic reefs. This species is highly valued in marine aquariums for its effective algae grazing, helping to maintain clean rock surfaces and reduce nuisance algae growth.
Care Level: Moderate. Requires stable water conditions and a mature tank with plenty of algae or supplemental feeding.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous, feeding on algae. Supplement with dried seaweed (nori) or specialised herbivore foods if natural algae is insufficient.
Compatibility: Reef safe and generally peaceful, but caution is advised around slow-moving or delicate invertebrates as their long spines can cause accidental damage.
Tank Requirements: Minimum tank size of 100 litres is recommended to provide adequate space. Ensure moderate to strong water flow and stable water parameters typical of reef aquariums.
Placement: Place on live rock or substrate where it can graze freely. Avoid placing near corals that may be damaged by its spines.
Additional Notes: Handle with care due to sharp spines. This species is nocturnal and may be more active during night hours.
