The Culcita novaeguineae, commonly known as the cushion starfish, is a fascinating and robust invertebrate prized in the marine aquarium hobby. This Extra Extra Large (XXL) specimen displays the characteristic pentagonal, inflated body shape that distinguishes it from typical starfish, making it a striking centrepiece for mature reef tanks.
Care and Husbandry: Culcita novaeguineae requires a well-established aquarium with stable water parameters. It thrives in tanks with a minimum volume of 150 litres to accommodate its size and movement. The species is primarily nocturnal and feeds on a variety of benthic invertebrates and detritus; supplemental feeding with meaty foods such as chopped molluscs or marine pellets is recommended to maintain optimal health.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: This starfish is generally peaceful and reef safe, but caution is advised as it may consume slow-moving or sessile invertebrates such as sponges or soft corals. It coexists well with most fish and invertebrates but should not be housed with aggressive tank mates that may harm it.
Environmental Requirements: Moderate water flow and subdued lighting mimic its natural habitat and reduce stress. Placement should allow easy access to the substrate or rockwork where it can forage comfortably.
Regular monitoring of water quality and careful acclimation are essential to ensure the health and longevity of this unique starfish in your marine aquarium.
