Stenopus hispidus, commonly known as the Banded Coral Shrimp, is a popular invertebrate for marine aquarium enthusiasts. Recognisable by its distinctive red and white banded body and long white antennae, this shrimp adds both colour and functionality to reef tanks.
Feeding: Stenopus hispidus is primarily a scavenger and cleaner shrimp. It feeds on detritus, leftover food, and parasites from fish. Supplement its diet with meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood to ensure optimal health.
Compatibility: Generally peaceful, but may exhibit territorial behaviour towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or as a mated pair in tanks with non-aggressive fish and invertebrates. Avoid housing with predatory fish that may view it as prey.
Reef Safety: With caution. While mostly reef safe, it may occasionally nip at small or delicate coral polyps. Monitor behaviour closely in reef setups.
Care Requirements: Requires stable water parameters typical of reef aquariums: temperature 24-27°C, salinity 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4. Moderate water flow and good oxygenation are beneficial. Provide plenty of live rock or crevices for hiding and cleaning stations.
Tank Size: Suitable for marine tanks from 75 litres upwards, allowing sufficient space for territory and natural behaviour.
Available in various sizes to suit different aquarium setups and preferences.
