Lysmata grabhami, commonly referred to as the Cleaner Shrimp, is a popular addition to marine aquariums due to its striking red and white banded appearance and its beneficial cleaning behaviour. This small invertebrate is renowned for establishing cleaning stations where fish voluntarily seek parasite removal, promoting a healthier aquarium environment.
Care Level: Easy to moderate. Lysmata grabhami adapts well to captive conditions but requires stable water parameters and a peaceful tank environment.
Diet: Omnivorous scavenger. It feeds on leftover food, detritus, and parasites from fish. Supplement its diet with meaty foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and specialised invertebrate pellets to ensure optimal health.
Compatibility: Peaceful and reef safe. It coexists well with most fish and invertebrates, making it an excellent choice for reef tanks. Avoid housing with aggressive predatory fish that may view it as prey.
Reef Safety: Yes. Lysmata grabhami is safe for corals and other sessile invertebrates.
Minimum Tank Size: 60 litres (approximately 15 gallons) to provide adequate space and stable water conditions.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock with crevices and caves to allow natural hiding and cleaning station behaviour. Position in a well-established reef aquarium with peaceful tank mates.
