Overview: Panulirus spp., commonly referred to as spiny lobsters, are a genus of marine crustaceans prized for their striking appearance and active nocturnal behaviour. These lobsters lack the large claws typical of true lobsters but compensate with long, spiny antennae and a robust exoskeleton.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Panulirus spp. require stable water parameters and a well-established tank with ample hiding places.
Feeding: Omnivorous scavengers, they thrive on a varied diet including meaty foods such as chopped seafood, molluscs, and specialised crustacean pellets. Feeding should be done in the evening or at night to align with their natural activity patterns.
Compatibility: Generally peaceful towards other invertebrates but may prey on slow or small tank mates. Avoid housing with very small or delicate fish and invertebrates. Suitable tank mates include larger, robust fish and other hardy invertebrates.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While they can coexist in reef tanks, Panulirus spp. may occasionally disturb sessile invertebrates or corals while foraging.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 120 litres is recommended to provide sufficient space and hiding spots. Provide plenty of live rock and crevices for shelter, especially during moulting periods.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow.
Lighting: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient; no special requirements.
Placement: Place in a mature aquarium with established biological filtration. Ensure plenty of rocky structures to mimic natural habitat.
Origin & Size: Various species within the Panulirus genus are found in tropical and subtropical waters worldwide. Exact origin and maximum size vary by species but small specimens typically measure under 10 cm in body length.
