The Porcupine Pufferfish (Diodon holocanthus) is a captivating species prized for its unique ability to inflate its body and erect sharp spines as a defence mechanism. This large pufferfish is a standout addition to any mature marine aquarium, offering both visual interest and intriguing behaviour.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires careful husbandry and a well-maintained environment.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial. Best kept singly or with robust tank mates that are not small enough to be considered prey. Avoid housing with small or slow-moving fish.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet including hard-shelled foods such as molluscs, crustaceans, and specialised frozen or fresh meaty marine foods to help wear down their continuously growing teeth.
Tank Requirements: Minimum tank size of 250 litres (approximately 65 gallons) to provide ample swimming space and territory. Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding. Secure lids are essential as puffers are known to be escape artists.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, and good water quality with moderate flow.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. May nip at invertebrates and corals, so not recommended for sensitive reef tanks.
Origin: Not Provided.
Maximum Size: Up to 50 cm (20 inches) in length.
