The Arothron nigropunctatus, or Blackspotted Puffer, is a striking species prized for its unique spotted appearance and engaging behaviour. This small variant is suitable for marine aquarium hobbyists with intermediate to advanced experience due to its specific care needs.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial, especially towards other puffers or slow-moving tank mates. Best kept singly or with robust, non-aggressive species. Avoid housing with small invertebrates or delicate fish, as puffers may nip fins or prey on them.
Diet: Omnivorous with a preference for hard-shelled foods such as molluscs, crustaceans, and snails to help wear down their continuously growing teeth. Supplement with high-quality frozen or live foods and marine algae to ensure balanced nutrition.
Tank Requirements: Minimum tank size of 150 litres (approximately 40 gallons) recommended to provide ample swimming space and territories. Maintain stable water parameters with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.020-1.025 SG, and pH 8.1-8.4. Moderate water flow and good filtration are essential to maintain water quality.
Placement: Provide plenty of rockwork and hiding places to mimic natural reef environments and reduce stress. Open swimming areas are also important for exercise.
With proper care, the Blackspotted Puffer can be a fascinating and rewarding addition to a marine aquarium.
