Arothron meleagris, also known as the Medium Pufferfish, is a visually captivating species prized by marine aquarium enthusiasts. Recognisable by its distinctive spotted pattern and robust body, this pufferfish adds character and interest to larger marine tanks.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and a well-maintained environment.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial. It is best kept with similarly sized or larger non-aggressive tankmates.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet including molluscs, crustaceans, and specialised frozen or prepared foods to maintain health and encourage natural behaviours.
Tank Requirements: Minimum tank size of 200 litres is recommended to provide ample swimming space and reduce stress. Provide plenty of hiding places and a secure lid as puffers are known to be escape artists.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. May nip at invertebrates and corals, so careful monitoring is advised in reef setups.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity 1.020-1.025 SG, and good water quality.
Additional Notes: Regular monitoring of water quality and diet is essential to prevent common health issues. Avoid housing with small, slow-moving fish that may be harassed.
