The Xanthichthys mento, commonly known as the Mento Triggerfish, is a visually captivating species prized for its unique shape and subtle colouration. Available as a pair in various sizes, these fish make an excellent addition to a mature marine aquarium.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and a suitably sized tank to thrive.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial, especially towards conspecifics or similar-shaped fish. Best kept with non-aggressive tank mates.
Diet: Omnivorous. Feed a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and high-quality frozen or pellet foods formulated for carnivorous marine fish.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 150 litres (approximately 40 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial behaviour.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While not known to actively nip at corals, they may disturb sessile invertebrates or small fish when stressed or hungry.
Lighting & Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting and moderate water flow are suitable. Avoid overly strong currents as this species prefers moderate swimming conditions.
Placement: Mid to upper levels of the tank, with plenty of hiding spots such as rockwork or caves to reduce stress.
Origin: Not Provided.
Maximum Size: Up to 25 cm (10 inches) in captivity.
When introducing a pair, ensure the tank is well-established with stable water parameters. Regular water changes and monitoring of water quality will support their health and longevity.
