The Wartface Triggerfish (Rhinecanthus verrucosus) is a visually captivating species known for its distinctive facial markings and robust nature. This large triggerfish is a popular choice among marine aquarium enthusiasts who appreciate its bold colours and engaging behaviour.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and a suitably sized aquarium to thrive.
Temperament and Compatibility: The Wartface Triggerfish is semi-aggressive and territorial, especially as it matures. It is best kept with other robust fish species and avoided with small, timid, or slow-moving tankmates. Caution is advised when housing with invertebrates, as it may prey on smaller crustaceans and molluscs.
Diet: A carnivorous omnivore, it thrives on a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, krill, chopped seafood, and specialised triggerfish pellets. Regular feeding of high-quality protein-rich foods supports vibrant colouration and health.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and territory.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef aquarium lighting is suitable. Moderate water flow mimicking natural reef currents is ideal to maintain water quality and fish health.
Placement: Provide plenty of rockwork and hiding places to reduce stress and establish territories. Avoid overcrowding to minimise aggression.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
