Rhinecanthus rectangulus, commonly known as the Picasso Triggerfish, is a visually stunning marine fish prized for its bold patterns and active behaviour. This medium-sized specimen is suitable for marine aquarium enthusiasts with some experience due to its territorial nature and specific care needs.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a well-maintained aquarium.
Temperament and Compatibility: Rhinecanthus rectangulus is known to be territorial and can be aggressive towards smaller or more passive tankmates. It is best kept with robust, similarly sized fish and avoided with small, delicate species. Providing ample hiding places and visual barriers helps reduce aggression.
Diet: This triggerfish is carnivorous and thrives on a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, krill, chopped seafood, and specialised marine pellets. Feeding should be done 1-2 times daily to maintain optimal health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 150 litres is recommended to provide sufficient swimming space and territory. The aquarium should include live rock for grazing and shelter, as well as open swimming areas.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting is suitable. Moderate water flow mimicking natural reef currents is ideal to keep the fish comfortable and healthy.
Placement: Place this fish in a tank with plenty of rockwork to establish territories and reduce stress. Avoid overcrowding to minimise aggressive encounters.
Origin: Native to the Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Typically grows up to 25 cm in length.
