The Melichthys indicus, commonly referred to as the Indian Triggerfish, is a captivating species prized for its bold colours and distinctive shape. This extra large specimen is ideal for experienced marine aquarists with sufficiently spacious tanks.
Care Level: Moderate to Advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a well-maintained environment.
Temperament: Semi-aggressive. Indian Triggerfish can be territorial, especially in smaller tanks or when housed with smaller, more passive fish.
Diet: Omnivorous. Provide a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, chopped seafood, and high-quality marine pellets or flakes to ensure optimal health.
Minimum Tank Size: 300 litres (approximately 80 gallons) or larger is recommended to accommodate their active swimming and territorial behaviour.
Compatibility: Best kept with similarly sized or robust tank mates. Avoid housing with very small or timid species.
Reef Safety: With Caution. Indian Triggerfish may nip at corals and invertebrates, so reef tanks should be monitored closely.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting and moderate water flow are suitable for this species.
Placement: Provide ample swimming space with plenty of rockwork for hiding and territorial boundaries.
Origin: Indian Ocean region.
Maximum Size: Up to 30 cm (12 inches) in length.
