Paracirrhites forsteri, commonly known as the Blackside Hawkfish, is a popular choice among marine aquarium enthusiasts due to its bold appearance and engaging behaviour. This species is characterised by its robust body, distinctive black markings along the sides, and a preference for perching on live rock or coral branches.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a well-established tank.
Temperament: Semi-aggressive. Paracirrhites forsteri can be territorial, especially towards smaller or more passive tankmates. It is best kept with similarly sized or larger fish to avoid bullying.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and high-quality frozen or pellet foods formulated for carnivorous marine fish.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) is recommended to provide sufficient space for swimming and territory establishment.
Lighting Requirements: Standard aquarium lighting is sufficient. This species does not have special lighting needs but benefits from a natural day-night cycle.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow mimicking natural reef environments is ideal, allowing the fish to perch comfortably without excessive current stress.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock with crevices and perching spots. This allows the hawkfish to exhibit natural behaviours such as ambushing prey and resting.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 20 cm (approximately 8 inches) in length.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While generally reef safe, Paracirrhites forsteri may prey on small ornamental shrimp or very small fish, so caution is advised when housing with delicate invertebrates.
