The Scorpaenopsis spp. are a genus of scorpionfish known for their excellent camouflage and ambush predation tactics. These medium-sized specimens are a captivating addition to marine aquaria, especially for hobbyists with experience in keeping predatory fish.
Care Level: Due to their venomous spines and specialised care needs, Scorpaenopsis spp. are recommended for advanced aquarists. They require a stable environment with appropriate hiding places and a secure lid to prevent escape.
Temperament and Compatibility: These scorpionfish are generally solitary and territorial. They can coexist with larger, non-aggressive tank mates but should not be housed with small or slow-moving fish, which may be seen as prey.
Diet: Carnivorous by nature, Scorpaenopsis spp. feed on live or frozen meaty foods such as shrimp, small fish, and crustaceans. Regular feeding with varied diet is essential to maintain health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 120 litres is advised to provide ample space and maintain water quality. The aquarium should include rockwork and crevices to mimic their natural habitat and offer shelter.
Reef Safety: With Caution – While they may be kept in reef setups, care must be taken as they can prey on smaller invertebrates and fish.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting and gentle to moderate water flow are suitable, replicating their natural reef environment.
Origin and Size: Origin and maximum size vary within the genus; therefore, conservative husbandry practices are recommended.
