Scorpaenopsis diabolus, commonly known as the False Stonefish, is a fascinating and highly camouflaged scorpionfish species prized in the marine aquarium hobby. This extra large specimen showcases the species’ remarkable ability to blend seamlessly with rocky reef environments, making it a captivating centrepiece for advanced marine aquarists.
Care Level: Due to its predatory nature and specialised care requirements, this species is recommended for experienced keepers only.
Temperament and Compatibility: Scorpaenopsis diabolus is a solitary and ambush predator. It is generally incompatible with smaller fish and invertebrates, which it may view as prey. It should be housed with similarly sized or larger tank mates that are not aggressive competitors.
Diet: Carnivorous by nature, this scorpionfish thrives on a diet of meaty foods such as live or frozen crustaceans, small fish, and other marine protein sources. Feeding should be regular but not excessive to maintain health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended to provide ample space for natural behaviour and to reduce stress. The aquarium should include plenty of live rock and crevices to mimic its natural habitat and offer hiding spots.
Water Parameters: Stable marine conditions with a temperature range of 24-27°C, salinity of 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow are ideal.
Lighting and Placement: Moderate lighting is sufficient, as this species does not require intense illumination. Placement should be near the bottom or within rocky areas where it can effectively camouflage and ambush prey.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While not typically harmful to corals, its predatory behaviour and venomous spines mean it is not suitable for reef tanks with small or delicate invertebrates.
Origin: Not Provided.
Maximum Size: Up to 30 cm (12 inches) in length.
