Pomacentrus moluccensis is a popular damselfish species prized for its vivid colours and lively nature. Suitable for a range of marine aquarium setups, this species adds dynamic movement and visual interest to reef or fish-only tanks.
Care Level: Easy to moderate care makes this fish suitable for hobbyists with some marine experience. They are hardy and adapt well to aquarium conditions when provided with proper care.
Temperament: Pomacentrus moluccensis is generally semi-aggressive, typical of damselfish. They can be territorial, especially in smaller tanks, so adequate space and hiding spots are recommended to reduce stress and aggression.
Diet: Omnivorous in nature, they thrive on a varied diet including high-quality flake or pellet foods, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and marine algae. Regular feeding 1-2 times daily is ideal.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 75 litres (20 gallons) is recommended to provide sufficient swimming space and territory.
Compatibility: Best kept with other semi-aggressive or peaceful species. Avoid housing with very timid or slow-moving fish to prevent bullying.
Reef Safety: With caution. While generally reef safe, Pomacentrus moluccensis may nip at coral polyps or small invertebrates, so monitoring is advised in sensitive reef setups.
Origin: Native to the Indo-Pacific region, including the Moluccas.
Maximum Size: Typically grows up to 8 cm (3 inches) in captivity.
Providing plenty of live rock for shelter and territory will help mimic their natural habitat and reduce stress. Regular water changes and stable water parameters are essential for optimal health.
