Sargocentron vexillarium, commonly known as the large squirrelfish, is a visually stunning species prized by marine aquarium enthusiasts. This nocturnal fish is characterised by its bright red and silver colouring and distinctive large eyes adapted for low-light environments.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a mature aquarium setup.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial with conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or in a large tank with ample space.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feeds primarily on meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Feeding should be done in the evening to mimic natural nocturnal feeding habits.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 150 litres (approximately 40 gallons) is recommended to provide sufficient swimming space and hiding spots.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While generally reef safe, this squirrelfish may prey on small invertebrates and should be introduced carefully into reef systems.
Lighting Requirements: Moderate to low lighting is preferred to simulate natural crepuscular conditions.
Water Flow: Moderate water movement is ideal, replicating natural reef environments without causing stress.
Placement: Provide plenty of rockwork and caves for shelter, especially for daytime hiding. Position in a quieter area of the tank to reduce stress.
Origin: Not Provided.
Maximum Size: Up to 20 cm (approximately 8 inches) in length.
