Sargocentron melanospilos, commonly known as the squirrelfish, is a captivating addition to mature marine aquariums. This large variant displays bright red hues with characteristic black spotting, making it a visually striking inhabitant.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but territorial, especially towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or in a large tank with plenty of space to reduce aggression. Compatible with other semi-aggressive or peaceful fish but avoid very small or slow-moving species that may be stressed.
Diet: Carnivorous, feeding primarily on meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Feeding should be done in the evening or at night to match their natural nocturnal activity.
Tank Requirements: Minimum tank size of 150 litres is recommended to provide sufficient swimming space and hiding spots. Provide ample rockwork and caves to mimic natural crevices where the fish can retreat during daylight hours.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow.
Lighting and Placement: Moderate lighting is suitable, as this species is nocturnal and prefers dimmer environments during the day. Position rockwork to create shaded areas and caves.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While generally reef safe, the Large Sargocentron melanospilos may prey on small invertebrates and should be introduced carefully into reef setups.
