The Unicolour Hamlet (Hypoplectrus unicolor) is a captivating marine fish prized for its uniform colouration and elegant swimming behaviour. This species belongs to the grouper family and is well-suited for marine aquarium enthusiasts with some experience.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful, the Unicolour Hamlet can coexist with other non-aggressive fish species. However, as with many groupers, it may exhibit territorial behaviour towards smaller tankmates or conspecifics. Avoid housing with very small or timid species to prevent stress or predation.
Diet: This carnivorous fish thrives on a varied diet including live or frozen meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and specialised marine pellets. Feeding should be done 1-2 times daily to maintain optimal health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial disputes. The aquarium should feature plenty of live rock for hiding and natural behaviour stimulation.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow. Regular water changes and quality monitoring are essential for long-term health.
Additional Notes: The Unicolour Hamlet is not considered reef safe due to its predatory nature and potential to eat small invertebrates. It is best kept in fish-only or fish-plus systems.
