Hoplolatilus luteus is a captivating tilefish species prized for its vibrant yellow colouring and peaceful temperament. Native to the Indo-Pacific region, this species is a burrowing fish that thrives in marine aquariums with ample sandy substrate and hiding places.
In captivity, Hoplolatilus luteus requires a minimum tank size of 180 litres to accommodate its active nature and burrowing behaviour. A deep sand bed or fine substrate is essential to allow natural digging and shelter construction. This species is generally peaceful but may become territorial towards conspecifics or similar-shaped fish, so careful consideration of tank mates is advised.
Diet should consist primarily of meaty marine foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Feeding multiple times daily in small amounts will help maintain optimal health. This tilefish is considered reef safe with caution, as it may occasionally disturb small invertebrates while burrowing.
Regular water changes and stable water parameters are important to ensure the wellbeing of Hoplolatilus luteus. Moderate lighting and gentle water flow are recommended to mimic its natural environment.
Suitable for intermediate to advanced marine aquarists, Hoplolatilus luteus adds both colour and interesting behaviour to a well-maintained marine aquarium.
