Pomacanthus zonipectus, commonly known as the Banded Angelfish, is a visually captivating species prized for its distinctive black and white banded pattern and vibrant yellow accents. This extra large specimen is suitable for advanced marine aquarists who can provide the space and care it demands.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a well-established aquarium.
Temperament: Semi-aggressive. It can be territorial, especially towards other angelfish or similar-shaped species. Best kept singly or in a very large tank with ample hiding spaces.
Diet: Omnivorous. Feed a varied diet including marine algae, spirulina, high-quality angelfish preparations, mysis shrimp, and other meaty foods to ensure optimal health and colouration.
Minimum Tank Size: 250 litres (approximately 65 gallons) or larger to accommodate its size and swimming needs.
Reef Safety: With Caution. May nip at sessile invertebrates such as corals and clam mantles, so not recommended for delicate reef tanks.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient; no special lighting needed.
Water Flow: Moderate water movement mimicking natural reef environments is ideal.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding. Position in the middle to lower areas of the tank.
Origin: Eastern Pacific, primarily found along the coast of Mexico and Central America.
Maximum Size: Up to 40 cm (16 inches) in captivity.
Due to its size and temperament, the Banded Angelfish is best suited for experienced hobbyists with large, well-maintained marine aquariums. Regular monitoring and a varied diet will help maintain its health and vibrant colours.
