The Halfmoon Angelfish (Pomacanthus semicirculatus) is a visually captivating species prized for its bold colouration and distinctive half-moon shape. This small variant is suitable for marine aquarists with intermediate to advanced experience due to its specific care needs.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a well-maintained environment.
Temperament: Semi-aggressive. It can be territorial, especially towards other angelfish or similar-shaped species.
Diet: Omnivorous. Provide a varied diet including marine algae, spirulina, mysis shrimp, and specialised angelfish preparations to ensure optimal health.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 250 litres (approximately 65 gallons) to provide ample swimming space and territories.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. May nip at corals and sessile invertebrates; suitable only for reef tanks with robust, well-established corals or fish-only setups.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting and moderate water flow are recommended to mimic natural reef conditions.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding places to reduce stress and territorial disputes.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 30 cm (12 inches) in captivity.
Regular water changes and monitoring of water quality are essential to maintain health. Avoid housing with very small or passive fish to prevent bullying.
