Pomacanthus navarchus, commonly known as the Blue-girdled Angelfish or Majestic Angelfish, is a visually stunning species prized by marine aquarium enthusiasts. Juveniles display a striking pattern of electric blue and yellow bands, making them a captivating centrepiece.
Care Level: This species is best suited for advanced hobbyists due to its specific dietary and environmental needs.
Temperament: Generally semi-aggressive. It can be territorial, especially towards other angelfish or similar-shaped species. Careful selection of tank mates is essential.
Diet: Omnivorous. Provide a varied diet including marine algae, spirulina, high-quality angelfish preparations, mysis shrimp, and other meaty foods. Supplement with sponge-based foods to mimic natural feeding habits.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 250 litres (approximately 65 gallons) is recommended to provide adequate swimming space and territories.
Lighting Requirements: Moderate lighting is sufficient. Bright lighting can enhance the fish’s vibrant colours but avoid excessive intensity.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow mimicking natural reef environments is ideal.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. Juveniles appreciate caves and crevices to retreat.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 30 cm (12 inches) in length.
Reef Safety: With Caution. May nip at sessile invertebrates such as corals and clams, so not recommended for delicate reef tanks.
Regular water changes and stable water parameters are crucial for maintaining health. Avoid sudden changes in water chemistry or temperature. This species benefits from a well-established aquarium with mature biological filtration.
