Centropyge flavicauda, commonly called the Flameback Angelfish, is a visually stunning marine fish prized for its bright yellow tail and contrasting body colours. This medium-sized angelfish is suitable for experienced marine aquarists who can provide a stable, mature reef environment.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced care is recommended due to its specific dietary needs and sensitivity to water quality.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or as a mated pair in larger tanks.
Diet: Omnivorous. Requires a varied diet including marine algae, spirulina, mysis shrimp, and specialised angelfish preparations to maintain vibrant colouration and health.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) is advised to provide ample swimming space and territories.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. While generally reef safe, it may nip at soft corals or clam mantles, so monitoring is essential.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef lighting and moderate water flow are suitable to mimic natural habitat conditions.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock with caves and crevices for hiding and grazing. Position in mid to lower tank levels.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 12 cm (4.7 inches).
Regular water changes and stable water parameters are essential to maintain health. Avoid sudden changes in water chemistry and ensure a well-established tank before introduction.
