Siganus unimaculatus, commonly referred to as the Foxface Rabbitfish, is a visually captivating species prized in marine aquariums for its vibrant colours and peaceful nature. This medium-sized specimen is suitable for hobbyists with intermediate experience and a well-established tank.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful, the Foxface Rabbitfish coexists well with other non-aggressive fish species. It may display mild territorial behaviour but is not known to be aggressive. Avoid housing with overly aggressive tank mates to reduce stress.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous, Siganus unimaculatus thrives on a diet rich in marine algae and seaweed. Supplement with high-quality herbivore flakes, pellets, and occasional meaty foods to ensure balanced nutrition.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 120 litres is recommended to provide ample swimming space. Maintain stable water parameters typical of a reef environment, including temperature between 24-27°C, salinity of 1.023-1.025, and pH 8.1-8.4.
Reef Compatibility: Reef safe with caution. While generally safe with corals, the Foxface Rabbitfish may nip at some soft corals or macroalgae. Monitor behaviour closely in reef setups.
Additional Care: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots to reduce stress. Regular water changes and good filtration are essential to maintain water quality.
