The Zebrasoma xanthurum, commonly known as the Purple Tang or Sailfin Tang, is a visually stunning marine fish prized for its deep purple body and bright yellow tail. This large tang species is a captivating addition to any mature marine aquarium, offering both beauty and active swimming behaviour.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a well-established tank.
Temperament: Generally semi-aggressive. It can be territorial, especially towards other tangs or similar-shaped fish.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous. Feed a varied diet rich in marine algae, seaweed sheets, and high-quality herbivore pellets. Supplement with occasional meaty foods.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial behaviour.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. While generally reef safe, it may nip at certain corals or sessile invertebrates.
Lighting & Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting and moderate to strong water flow are recommended to mimic natural reef conditions.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. Ensure open swimming areas to accommodate its active nature.
Origin: Native to the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
Maximum Size: Up to 25 cm (10 inches) in length.
Due to its size and temperament, it is best suited for experienced hobbyists with large, well-maintained systems. Regular monitoring and a balanced diet will help maintain vibrant colours and overall health.
