The Yellow Tang (Zebrasoma flavescens) is a strikingly bright yellow surgeonfish native to the Pacific Ocean, widely appreciated in the marine aquarium hobby for its vibrant colour and active behaviour. This small variant is suitable for aquarists looking to add a splash of colour to their reef or fish-only setups.
Care Level: Moderate. The Yellow Tang is generally hardy but requires stable water parameters and a well-maintained aquarium.
Temperament: Semi-aggressive. While generally peaceful, Yellow Tangs can be territorial, especially towards other tangs or similar-shaped fish.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous. Provide a diet rich in marine algae and seaweed, supplemented with high-quality flake or pellet foods designed for herbivorous fish. Occasional meaty treats can be offered.
Minimum Tank Size: 114 litres (30 gallons) or larger is recommended to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial behaviour.
Reef Safe: Yes. Yellow Tangs are considered reef safe and typically do not harm corals or invertebrates.
Lighting Requirements: Standard aquarium lighting suitable for reef tanks is sufficient.
Water Flow: Moderate to strong water movement mimics their natural environment and supports their health.
Placement: Best kept singly or in a large tank with plenty of hiding places and open swimming areas. Avoid housing with other tangs unless the tank is very large.
Origin: Pacific Ocean, primarily around Hawaii.
Maximum Size: Up to 20 cm (8 inches) in length.
With proper care, the Yellow Tang can be a long-lived and visually stunning addition to your marine aquarium.
