The Zebrasoma desjardinii, commonly known as the Sailfin Tang, is a highly sought-after species for marine aquariums due to its distinctive zebra-like striping and graceful swimming behaviour. This extra large specimen offers a stunning focal point for mature reef or fish-only marine tanks.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful, the Sailfin Tang can coexist well with other non-aggressive fish species. However, it may show territorial behaviour towards conspecifics or similar tang species, so it is best kept singly or in a very large aquarium with ample hiding spaces.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous, Zebrasoma desjardinii thrives on a diet rich in marine algae and seaweed. Supplement with high-quality dried seaweed sheets, spirulina, and occasional meaty foods to ensure balanced nutrition.
Tank Requirements: Due to its size and active swimming nature, a minimum tank size of 250 litres is recommended. Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and shelter. Stable water parameters and excellent filtration are essential for optimal health.
Reef Compatibility: Reef safe with caution. While generally safe with corals, the Sailfin Tang may occasionally nip at sessile invertebrates or soft corals, so monitoring is advised.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Requires stable water conditions and a well-established aquarium.
