The Acanthurus sohal, commonly known as the Sohal Tang, is a visually stunning surgeonfish native to the Red Sea and western Indian Ocean. Renowned for its vibrant blue and white horizontal stripes and bold, territorial behaviour, this species is a prized addition to large marine aquaria.
Care Level: Due to its size and temperament, the Sohal Tang is best suited for advanced hobbyists with experience in maintaining large, well-established reef or fish-only systems.
Temperament and Compatibility: The Sohal Tang is highly territorial and can be aggressive towards conspecifics and other tangs. It is recommended to keep only one individual per tank or introduce it last to a community with robust tank mates. Avoid housing with smaller, timid species.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous, the Sohal Tang thrives on a diet rich in marine algae and seaweed. Supplement with high-quality herbivore pellets, flakes, and occasional meaty foods to ensure balanced nutrition.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 250 litres (approximately 65 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial aggression. Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate to strong lighting supports algal growth for grazing. Moderate to strong water flow mimics natural reef conditions and promotes fish health.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. While generally reef safe, the Sohal Tang may nip at corals and sessile invertebrates, especially if underfed or stressed.
Origin: Native to the Red Sea and western Indian Ocean.
Maximum Size: Up to 40 cm (16 inches) in length.
