The Acanthurus pyroferus, commonly known as the Pyroferus Tang, is a visually captivating species prized for its vibrant orange and black patterning. This medium-sized tang is a peaceful addition to a mature marine aquarium, offering both beauty and active swimming behaviour.
Care Level: Moderate. This species requires stable water parameters and a well-established tank.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but may show territorial behaviour towards conspecifics or similar tang species.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous. Provide a varied diet rich in marine algae, supplemented with high-quality herbivore flakes, pellets, and occasional meaty foods.
Minimum Tank Size: 120 litres (approx. 30 gallons) to allow ample swimming space and reduce territorial stress.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. Generally reef safe but may nip at certain sessile invertebrates or coral polyps.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 20 cm (8 inches) in length.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting suitable for mixed reef setups.
Water Flow: Moderate to strong flow to simulate natural reef environments.
Placement: Mid to upper levels of the aquarium where it can swim freely and graze on algae.
Regular water changes and stable water chemistry are essential to maintain health. Avoid housing with aggressive tank mates to prevent stress. Providing live rock with ample algae growth will support natural grazing behaviour.
