The Acanthurus olivaceus, or Orangeband Surgeonfish, is a visually captivating tang species prized for its distinctive orange band and olive body. This small variant is suitable for marine aquarium enthusiasts with some experience, as it requires stable water conditions and a spacious tank.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced care is recommended due to its specific dietary and environmental needs.
Temperament: Generally semi-aggressive; it can be territorial towards conspecifics and other tangs but coexists well with a variety of other marine fish when introduced properly.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous, feeding on marine algae and seaweed. Supplement with high-quality marine-based vegetable flakes, pellets, and occasional meaty foods to ensure balanced nutrition.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is advised to provide sufficient swimming space and reduce territorial behaviour.
Reef Safety: With caution – may nip at certain sessile invertebrates and soft corals, so monitor closely in reef setups.
Lighting & Water Flow: Standard reef lighting and moderate to strong water flow are suitable to mimic natural habitat conditions.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. Introduce this tang last if housing with other surgeonfish to minimise aggression.
Origin: Native to the Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Typically grows up to 25 cm (10 inches) in length.
