The Acanthurus mata, commonly known as the Blue-lined Surgeonfish, is a visually stunning tang that adds dynamic movement and colour to a mature marine aquarium. Recognisable by its elongated body and distinctive blue lines, this species is a moderately active swimmer that requires ample space to exhibit natural behaviours.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species is best suited for aquarists with some experience in maintaining tangs due to its specific dietary and environmental needs.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally semi-aggressive, the Acanthurus mata can be territorial, especially towards other tangs or similar-shaped fish. It is recommended to keep only one individual per tank or introduce multiple tangs simultaneously in a sufficiently large aquarium to reduce aggression. Compatible with a variety of peaceful to semi-aggressive marine species.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous, this tang thrives on a diet rich in marine algae and seaweed. Supplement with high-quality dried seaweed sheets, spirulina, and occasional meaty foods such as mysis or brine shrimp to ensure balanced nutrition.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended to provide adequate swimming space and reduce territorial disputes.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef aquarium lighting is suitable. Moderate to strong water flow mimics their natural reef environment and helps maintain fish health.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. Open swimming areas are essential for this active species.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 25 cm (10 inches) in length.
