The Acanthurus lineatus, or Lined Surgeonfish, is a visually stunning tang characterised by its vivid blue and yellow horizontal stripes. This species is best suited for advanced hobbyists due to its active swimming behaviour and specific care needs.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Requires stable water parameters and a mature aquarium environment.
Temperament: Semi-aggressive. Can be territorial, especially towards other tangs or similar-shaped fish.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous. Feed a varied diet rich in marine algae, seaweed sheets, and high-quality herbivore pellets or flakes. Occasional meaty foods can be offered but should not dominate the diet.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) to provide sufficient swimming space and reduce territorial behaviour.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. May nip at soft corals or clam mantles; not recommended for delicate reef setups.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef lighting and moderate to strong water flow to mimic natural reef conditions.
Placement: Provide plenty of open swimming areas along with live rock for grazing and shelter.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 25 cm (10 inches) in length.
Regular water changes and maintaining excellent water quality are essential for the health of this species. Due to their territorial nature, it is advisable to keep only one individual per tank or introduce multiple tangs simultaneously in a sufficiently large aquarium.
