The Acanthurus chirurgus, or Doctorfish Tang, is a popular choice among marine fish enthusiasts due to its unique appearance and active behaviour. This medium-sized tang features a robust body with a characteristic scalpel-like spine on each side of its tail base, which it uses for defence.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and a spacious aquarium.
Temperament: Semi-aggressive. It can be territorial, especially towards other tangs or similar-shaped fish, so careful consideration is needed when selecting tank mates.
Diet: Herbivorous. A diet rich in marine algae and seaweed is essential. Supplement with high-quality herbivore flakes or pellets and occasional meaty foods.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) to provide sufficient swimming space and reduce territorial behaviour.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. While generally reef safe, it may nip at certain sessile invertebrates or corals, so monitor behaviour closely.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting and moderate to strong water flow mimic its natural reef environment.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. Ensure open swimming areas to accommodate its active nature.
Origin: Western Atlantic, including the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico.
Maximum Size: Up to 38 cm (15 inches) in length.
