The Acanthurus blochii, commonly known as Bloch’s Tang, is a striking and robust species of surgeonfish prized for its bold markings and active swimming behaviour. This Extra Large specimen is perfect for experienced marine aquarists seeking a prominent centerpiece fish for a suitably sized reef or fish-only aquarium.
Care Level: Moderate to Advanced. Bloch’s Tang requires stable water parameters and ample swimming space to thrive.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally semi-aggressive, this species can be territorial, especially towards conspecifics or similar-shaped tangs. It is best housed singly or in a large tank with plenty of hiding places and visual barriers. Compatible with a variety of other robust marine fish but caution is advised when mixing with other surgeonfish.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous, Acanthurus blochii benefits from a diet rich in marine algae and seaweed. Supplement with high-quality herbivore flakes, pellets, and occasional meaty foods to ensure balanced nutrition.
Minimum Tank Size: Due to its active nature and potential size, a minimum tank volume of 250 litres (approximately 65 gallons) is recommended to provide adequate swimming space.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While generally reef compatible, this tang may nip at some sessile invertebrates or coral polyps, so monitoring is advised in reef setups.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting and moderate to strong water flow are suitable to mimic its natural reef environment.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and shelter. Position the fish in the mid to upper water column where it can swim freely.
Origin: Not Provided.
Maximum Size: Up to 30 cm (12 inches) in length.
