Lysmata wurdemanni, commonly known as the Cleaner Shrimp, is a highly sought-after invertebrate for marine and reef aquariums. This tank-bred variety ensures healthier, more resilient specimens that adapt well to captive conditions.
These shrimps are renowned for their symbiotic cleaning behaviour, where they remove parasites and dead tissue from fish, promoting a healthier aquarium environment. Their striking red and white banded appearance adds vibrant colour and dynamic activity to your tank.
Care and Husbandry
- Diet: Omnivorous scavengers; feed on meaty foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and specialised invertebrate pellets. They also consume detritus and leftover food.
- Compatibility: Peaceful and reef safe; compatible with most fish and invertebrates. Avoid housing with aggressive predatory species that may view them as prey.
- Reef Safety: Yes. They pose no threat to corals or sessile invertebrates.
- Tank Size: Minimum 40 litres recommended to provide adequate space and stable water conditions.
- Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature 24-27°C, salinity 1.023-1.025 SG, and good water quality.
- Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for hiding and cleaning stations. They are often seen perched on rocks or corals.
Additional Notes
Tank-bred Lysmata wurdemanni tend to acclimate more readily and exhibit fewer parasites compared to wild-caught specimens. Their cleaning behaviour can be observed as they interact with fish, making them both functional and visually appealing additions to your marine aquarium.
