Gobiodon okinawae, commonly known as the Okinawa Goby, is a charming and peaceful species native to the coral reefs of the western Pacific. This tank-bred variety ensures healthier specimens and better adaptation to aquarium life.
These gobies are small, typically reaching up to 4cm in length, making them suitable for smaller reef aquariums. They are known for their symbiotic relationship with Acropora corals, often residing within the branches, which provides them shelter and a natural environment.
Care and Husbandry:
- Temperament: Peaceful and non-aggressive, suitable for community reef tanks.
- Diet: Omnivorous; feeds on small meaty foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and finely chopped seafood, as well as algae and biofilm.
- Minimum Tank Size: 30 litres (approximately 8 gallons) to provide adequate space and stable water parameters.
- Water Parameters: Maintain temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, and stable pH around 8.1-8.4.
- Lighting and Flow: Moderate lighting to support coral growth; gentle to moderate water flow mimicking natural reef conditions.
- Placement: Best housed in reef tanks with healthy Acropora corals or similar branching corals to provide natural shelter and promote natural behaviour.
Tank-bred Gobiodon okinawae are reef safe and compatible with most peaceful marine species. Avoid housing with large predatory fish that may view them as prey.
