Gobiodon okinawae, commonly known as the Okinawa Coral Goby, is a small, peaceful fish native to the Indo-Pacific region. This tank-bred variety is available in various sizes, making it suitable for a range of aquarium setups.
These gobies are renowned for their vibrant colours and close association with branching corals, particularly Acropora species. They spend much of their time nestled within coral branches, providing natural pest control and adding dynamic interest to reef tanks.
Care and Husbandry
- Temperament: Peaceful and non-aggressive, suitable for community reef tanks.
- Diet: Omnivorous; accepts a variety of foods including finely chopped meaty foods, frozen mysis, brine shrimp, and high-quality marine pellets or flakes.
- Minimum Tank Size: 30 litres (approximately 8 gallons) recommended to provide adequate space and stable water parameters.
- Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature 24-27°C, salinity 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4.
- Lighting and Flow: Moderate lighting and gentle to moderate water flow to mimic natural reef environments.
- Placement: Best housed in tanks with healthy branching corals where they can seek shelter and establish territory.
Compatibility
Gobiodon okinawae is reef safe and generally compatible with other peaceful fish and invertebrates. Avoid housing with large predatory species that may view them as prey.

As a tank-bred specimen, these gobies tend to adapt well to captive conditions and contribute positively to reef aquarium biodiversity. Regular feeding and stable water quality are key to their health and longevity.
