The Balistapus undulatus, or Orange-lined Triggerfish, is a visually captivating species prized by marine aquarium enthusiasts. This large triggerfish displays vivid orange lines across its body, making it a standout addition to a suitably sized marine tank.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced due to territorial behaviour and specific husbandry needs.
Temperament: This species is known for its bold and territorial nature. It can be aggressive towards smaller or more passive tankmates, so careful selection of compatible species is essential.
Diet: Omnivorous. Provide a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, chopped seafood, and high-quality marine pellets or flakes to ensure balanced nutrition.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial aggression.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While not strictly reef safe, it may coexist with robust corals but can nip at invertebrates or smaller fish.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting and moderate water flow are suitable for this species.
Placement: Provide plenty of rockwork and hiding places to establish territories and reduce stress.
Origin: Native to the Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 30 cm (12 inches) in length.
Due to their territorial nature, it is best to keep Balistapus undulatus singly or as a mated pair in a large tank. Regular monitoring of behaviour and tank conditions will help maintain a healthy environment.
