Oxymonacanthus longirostris, commonly known as the Orange Spotted Filefish, is a visually stunning species prized for its vibrant orange spots and delicate body shape. This filefish is a specialised feeder, primarily grazing on live Acropora corals, making it a challenging but rewarding addition to mature reef aquariums.
Care Level: Due to its specialised diet and sensitivity, this species is recommended for advanced marine aquarists with established reef systems.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be shy. Best kept singly or as a mated pair. Compatible with other peaceful reef inhabitants but avoid aggressive tank mates that may stress this delicate fish.
Diet: Primarily feeds on live Acropora polyps in the wild. In captivity, it requires a diet supplemented with specialised coral-based foods and frozen preparations designed for corallivores. Careful acclimation to captive diets is essential.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 120 litres is recommended to provide ample swimming space and a healthy coral environment. Stable water parameters and pristine water quality are critical.
Reef Safety: With caution – this species feeds on Acropora corals and may cause damage to SPS corals in reef tanks.
Origin: Native to the Indo-Pacific region.
Additional Notes: This filefish is sensitive to changes in water quality and diet. Regular monitoring and a mature reef environment with abundant live coral are essential for long-term health.
