The Aluterus scriptus, or Medium Filefish, is a fascinating species prized for its unusual body shape and subtle colouration. This fish is best suited for experienced aquarists due to its size and specific care needs.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful, the Medium Filefish can coexist with other non-aggressive species but may show territorial behaviour towards similar-shaped fish. Avoid housing with small, delicate invertebrates as they may be targeted.
Diet: Omnivorous by nature, Aluterus scriptus requires a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and algae-based preparations to ensure optimal health.
Tank Requirements: Due to its potential size and active swimming behaviour, a minimum tank size of 300 litres is recommended. Provide ample swimming space with plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, and moderate water flow. Lighting should be moderate to replicate natural reef environments.
This species is not considered reef safe as it may nip at corals and sessile invertebrates, so it is best kept in fish-only or fish-plus-live rock setups.
