The Clown Triggerfish (Balistoides conspicillum) is one of the most visually stunning triggerfish species available for marine aquariums. Recognisable by its distinctive black body adorned with large white spots and vibrant yellow markings, it adds a dramatic focal point to any large marine tank.
Care Level: This species is best suited for intermediate to advanced aquarists due to its territorial nature and specific husbandry needs.
Temperament and Compatibility: Clown Triggerfish are known for their bold and sometimes aggressive temperament, especially as they mature. They should be housed with robust tank mates and never with small, timid fish. Compatibility with other triggerfish or similarly aggressive species should be approached with caution.
Diet: A carnivorous species, the Clown Triggerfish thrives on a varied diet including meaty foods such as crustaceans, molluscs, and high-quality frozen or prepared marine fish foods. Regular feeding of hard-shelled prey helps maintain dental health.
Tank Requirements: Due to their active swimming and territorial behaviour, a minimum tank size of 250 litres is recommended for a small specimen, with larger tanks preferred as the fish grows. Provide plenty of live rock for hiding places and territories.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity of 1.020-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow.
Reef Compatibility: Not reef safe. This species may prey on invertebrates and small fish, so it is unsuitable for reef aquariums.
