The Five-Stripe Wrasse (Thalassoma quinquevittatum) is a beautifully coloured marine fish native to tropical reef environments. This species is prized for its vibrant stripes and energetic swimming patterns, making it a captivating addition to larger reef aquariums.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This wrasse requires stable water parameters and a secure tank lid as it is known to be an agile jumper.
Temperament: Semi-aggressive. It can be territorial, especially towards smaller or more passive fish. Best kept with similarly sized or larger tank mates.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet including high-quality frozen or live foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Supplement with marine pellets or flakes formulated for carnivores.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) to provide sufficient swimming space and reduce territorial behaviour.
Reef Safe: With Caution. May nip at small invertebrates or sessile animals; not recommended for delicate coral-only reef tanks.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient.
Water Flow: Moderate water movement mimicking natural reef currents is ideal.
Placement: Mid to upper water column. Provide plenty of live rock for hiding and foraging.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 15 cm (6 inches) in length.
Ensure a tightly fitting lid to prevent escapes, and maintain excellent water quality with regular monitoring. This species thrives in mature aquariums with stable conditions.
