The Moon Wrasse (Thalassoma lunare) is a beautifully coloured wrasse known for its vibrant blues, greens, and yellows, making it a standout in any marine aquarium. This extra large specimen is ideal for experienced aquarists with spacious tanks, as it requires ample swimming space and a well-established reef environment.
Temperament and Compatibility: The Moon Wrasse is generally peaceful but can be territorial, especially towards smaller or similarly shaped fish. It is best kept with other semi-aggressive or robust species. Avoid housing with very small or timid fish to prevent stress.
Diet: This carnivorous wrasse thrives on a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and specialised marine pellets. Feeding multiple times daily in small portions is recommended to maintain optimal health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is advised to provide sufficient swimming room. The aquarium should have plenty of live rock for hiding and foraging, as well as secure lids to prevent jumping.
Water Parameters and Environment: Maintain stable marine conditions with a temperature range of 24-27°C, salinity of 1.023-1.025 SG, and pH between 8.1 and 8.4. Moderate water flow and lighting suitable for reef setups are ideal.
Reef Safety: With caution. While generally reef safe, the Moon Wrasse may prey on small invertebrates such as shrimps and small crabs, so caution is advised when keeping with delicate reef inhabitants.
