The Moon Wrasse (Thalassoma lunare) is a popular choice for marine aquarium enthusiasts seeking a lively and visually striking fish. Known for its vibrant colours and dynamic swimming behaviour, this species adds movement and interest to reef tanks.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. The Moon Wrasse requires stable water conditions and a well-established aquarium.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or in a large tank with plenty of hiding spaces.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet including high-quality frozen or live meaty foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Supplement with marine pellets or flakes formulated for carnivores.
Minimum Tank Size: 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) to provide ample swimming space and territory.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. While generally reef safe, Moon Wrasses may prey on small invertebrates such as shrimp and small crabs. Monitor interactions carefully in reef setups.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef aquarium lighting and moderate water flow are suitable. Ensure plenty of live rock for hiding and foraging.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 15 cm (6 inches) in length.
Providing a secure lid is essential as Moon Wrasses are known jumpers. Regular water changes and maintaining stable parameters will help keep this species healthy and vibrant.
