Thalassoma jansenii, commonly known as Jansen’s Wrasse, is a strikingly colourful wrasse species prized for its active swimming behaviour and vibrant hues. This medium-sized fish is best suited to experienced marine aquarists due to its specific care requirements and temperament.

Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Jansen’s Wrasse requires stable water parameters and a well-established aquarium.

Temperament: Semi-aggressive. It can be territorial, especially towards similar-shaped wrasses, so compatibility should be carefully considered.

Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet including high-quality frozen or live meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Supplement with marine pellets or flakes formulated for carnivores.

Minimum Tank Size: At least 150 litres (40 US gallons) to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial behaviour.

Reef Safety: With Caution. While generally reef safe, Jansen’s Wrasse may prey on small invertebrates such as shrimps and small crabs, so caution is advised in invertebrate-rich reef tanks.

Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting and moderate water flow are suitable. Ensure good water quality with stable parameters.

Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for hiding and foraging. This species appreciates a well-structured environment to establish territories.

Origin: Indo-Pacific region.

Maximum Size: Up to 15 cm (6 inches) in length.

Jansen’s Wrasse is a captivating addition to a peaceful community reef tank with compatible tank mates. Avoid housing with very small or timid fish to prevent stress or aggression.
